Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is excellent with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are some very minor lacunae (original casting flaws), in particular to the base and at Selene's chest on the proper left side. There is a minor stable fissure between the moon and Selene's back.

At age 32, Bourdelle attracted the admiration of Auguste Rodin whose studio he joined in 1893. As Rodin's colleague he translated the master's clay models into finished marbles, and in the process he developed a complete understanding of the master's methods and philosophy. Bourdelle was no mere assistant; Rodin corresponded with him on equal terms about his creative process, once writing to him, "It was Michelangelo who liberated me from academicism." Bourdelle conceived the model Séléné debout in 1923. Representing the lunar goddess Selene, it shows a young woman expressively raising her arms upwards, her body following the contour of an arc in the shape of a crescent moon. The present cast is the first artist's proof (hence the inscription: E.A.1 for 'Epreuve d'artist 1') from an edition of 8 casts plus 2 artist proofs by the Susse foundry.
