Condition

The panel is flat, uncradled and stable. It is comprised of two boards, joined horizontally across upper quadrant, and supported by battens on the reverse. There is bevelling on all four edges, less prominent along the upper edge. The painting reads well beneath an old varnish and presents an attractive image that retains good detail in areas, for example, in the boat at center. The horizontal grain of the wood is visible in the sky, although this is not distracting. Retouching to the aforementioned horizontal join is faintly visible to the naked eye. Inspection under UV reveals small spots and fine lines of retouching scattered in the sky, for example, to the left of the lower flag of the boat and some spots near the extreme edges. Fewer retouches are visible in the foreground water, for example just a few small spots scattered here and there and a thin horizontal line in the lower right corner. Painting can be hung in its current state. Offered in a carved giltwood frame.
