Condition

This work is overall in very good condition with very fine hairline craquelure visible across the surface. The damaged canvas had been repaired before being painted on.

《西門町》−美好年代

西門町對老一輩的臺北人有著美好的青春回憶,在九〇年代以前無疑是台灣最繁華的娛樂聖地。六〇年代的文藝青年都會聚集在西門町的「野人咖啡屋」,席德進也不意外,1952年到臺北的席德進就常到野人咖啡屋,也經常在此幫人即興畫像,連席德進最喜歡的《紅衣少年》的主角莊佳村也經常到咖啡屋裡,可見西門町對於席德進別具意義。

《西門町》完成於1967,是席德進到歐美考察5年後返台隔年完成的作品。美國當時正流行著普普藝術,藝術家曾經說過巴黎的畫風對他沒有影響,反倒是美國的普普藝術使他感到鼓舞及興奮。席德進完美的利用《西門町》呼應著時代。 畫裡的商標及招牌林立帶有普普藝術風格的概念,亦訴說著西門町當年的商業與娛樂,車水馬龍的人潮塞滿著西門町的街道,熱鬧奔騰的街市照亮著夜晚,呈現出台灣當年最繁華的不夜城。 我們幾乎可以感受到六〇年代西門町的熱鬧與繁華。席德進市場上的油畫創作的較少,多以肖像為主,以城市為主題的油畫也甚少有用此熱鬧繽紛的色彩,現今釋出,甚為難得。
