「東西方深層異質文化的融合,將開創未來世界繪畫藝術的新天地。」─潘其流
潘其流曾追隨林風眠三十餘年,深受其著名的「中西調合」理論影響,發展出對中國現代藝術的獨到看法。他認為使用西方繪畫為媒介表達對東方文化的感情,可說是東方人獨有的優勢。在師法西學數十年後,中國藝術家深刻的瞭解西方的藝術、技法、文化;相對西方而言,卻常對東方一知半解。潘其流搶占文化交流的先機,以東方為主題,在繪畫中揉合抽象表現主義、立體派、浮雕等技法,探索未來繪畫的新天地。
潘其流兼善繪畫與雕塑,曾於一九五九年前往敦煌石窟與河西走廊等沙漠地帶,研究中國古代佛教雕像與壁畫,《沙地春痕》可能來自於當時的回憶,雖以抽象表現卻也寫出沙漠中蒼涼的實景。畫中凝結於壓克力彩下那些有如淺浮雕意境疊出的質地與層次,是藝術家由雕塑經驗中提煉的美學元素,綜合背景大面積刷出的速度與空氣感,創造似古詩詞的節奏,使觀者感受古意橫生、大氣渾厚之感,一如著名藝評家丁羲元先生所說的:「(潘其流作品中)那流光泛彩的色層內是流不盡的傳統精靈,民族魂魄…完全是水到渠成,自然流瀉,詩一般的真氣內充。」
