1958年起,趙無極排除對於符號的援引,邁向純粹的抽象,開始從內在心象探求靈感。1959年的《湛藍》,以淡藍色作基調,混合以柔和的玄棕,如同天地初開時的熹微晨光。震顫墨黑的線條交疊匯聚於畫幅中央,畫心的一點純白則於無形之中,與周遭的動態結構呈現鮮明對比。藝術創造既為心靈與畫面的接觸,畫家對色彩之間關係的探索,猶如其個人心靈的坦然開拓,對應畫家對人與人之間的相知、相識以至相斥的感懷。此作創於趙無極與第一任妻子謝景蘭離異、邂逅第二任妻子陳美琴之間。由內而外擴散的力量,從混沌漸化明朗,傳達著畫家從創傷之中恢復的心象,繼而幻化出一片抽象風景,力量滋生成形,預示一個強大新時代-「狂草時期」的降臨。畫家在運用油彩細膩光感的同時,依然講究國畫氣韻。東西交融的魅力盡見於虛實相生的畫面,初觀莫測,久視彌珍。
