朱德群自五○年代開始研究抽象繪畫，受到法國抽像大師史塔耶爾（Nicolas De Staёl ）啟發，朱德群以色塊及線條作為作品的構成元素，繼「雪景」系列的創作顛峰之後，八○年代後期朱德群的繪畫成就已臻成熟。各地博物館的展覽邀請不斷。創作於一九八九年的《夜之瀑流》，當年即參與Gabrielle Fiegans畫廊的展覽，亦被選為當次展覽邀請函之封面，可見當年對此作品之重視。
《夜之瀑流》以筆刷大刀闊斧地架構出畫面的主旋律，充滿速度感的粗細黑線，如水墨一般，流暢具有空氣感，在抽象表現中寫出瀑布水流與水花交織的磅礡韻律，將西方藝術的音樂性揉入中國傳統，調和出光和暗之間鮮明卻融洽的獨特抒情抽象繪畫，印證好友吳冠中所言：「德群的作品處處追求力度，他痛痛快快用大黑塊及或粗或細的黑線來抒發胸中豪氣，水墨畫的濃郁的黑、流暢的線都湧進了他的油畫。中國傳統藝術中的大寫意、狂草、隨方就圓的處理手法都哺育了他。」
