Launched in 1967, the Sea-Dweller Ref. 1665 was the first wristwatch designed for use in saturation diving. Aimed for amateur and hobbyist divers, Ref. 1665 was modeled after the Submariner, with a tougher case and pressure release valve allowing the watch to withstand compression.
The present Ref. 1665 is an original example of a Mark I dial variation of the Double Red Sea-Dweller. Two lines of red text are printed in the same size and serif font, possibly over white paint. The present lot has faded to an attractive and unique light pink/white. The coronet is clearly delineated with a well defined "o" base. Further, the case back is engraved "patent pending", as the earliest 1665s were designated.
The present example has been serviced by Rolex, indicated by the strike through case back inscription noting the proper case number "294," a frequent occurrence among Ref. 1665 models.
