This brooch was purchased from Sotheby's in London on 10th July in 1986 by a close friend of Margaret Thatcher. Margaret Thatcher wore the brooch on numerous public occasions such as on the day that she offered her resignation to the Queen in 1990 and when she announced her decision to leave the House of Commons in 1991.

Accompanied by a facsimile of a letter from Cartier London, dated 3rd February 1989, stating that the brooch was made as a single piece in 1937, and originally sold in 1939. The letter also gives the owner of the brooch permission on behalf of Cartier London 'to select jewellery on approbation for the use of the Prime Minister'.

Proceeds of this lot will go to the Endeavour Fund

In 2012, fuelled by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry’s passion for supporting the recovery of wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women, The Royal Foundation created the Endeavour Fund. The programme offers seed funding for sporting and adventure challenges and helps those recovering from mental and physical injuries with hands-on support, mentoring and advice. Endeavour plays an important role in ensuring that more servicemen and women have the opportunity to rediscover their self-belief and fighting spirit as part of their recovery.

Since its inception, the Endeavour Fund has supported over 1,500 men and women to take the next step in their recovery by taking part in an endeavour, such as Turn to Starboard, which uses sailing to help Servicemen and women move beyond injury and Mission Motorsport, which provides opportunities for Service Personnel and Veterans to engage with Motorsport whilst providing vital training and networking into the automotive industry.

This charity is very close to the heart of the seller of this brooch.
