註：張善孖以畫虎聞名中外，狀山君諸態，或怒或憨，俏妙傳神，筆下每有喻意，或嘲時弊，如作〈虎羊圖〉喻軍閥之殘暴，又或砥礪士氣，發揚民族精神，本幅即如是。

本幅乃其早年八尺鉅製，畫中見黃昏時分，松風流澗，似罩暮色，景致蕭疏慘澹，虎巡山間，駐足回首，瞪目怒視，勢若揚威，裂嘴嘶吼，聲傳千里，有震聾發聵之效，民族奮起，此其時也。

畫上壓角鈐「風濤戎馬過來人」印，蓋善子早歲投身革命，一度從戎，曾出任蜀軍第一師第二旅少將旅長，行伍生涯，亦與印文切合。
