註:一九四八年,關外烽火紛飛,華北局勢緊張,故都民生窘迫,黎庶生活百態,遂成為蔣兆和期間經常入畫之題材。「一籃春色賣遍人間」之畫題,他屢寫之,畫中賣花女手挽竹籃,沿街叫賣,雖不離描寫現實,惟手法較抒情,非著重生活重擔壓迫之苦況,似對未來仍有期盼。
同名另作,寫於是年四月,現藏中國國家博物館,畫中構圖與本幅大同小異,惟賣花女面向相反,描寫側面為主,且籃中花卉朱色點染。本幅則全出素墨,面部輪廓,披肩散髮,粗布衣裳,勾勒擦染,刻劃精微,尤以雙手交搭,輕負花籃,竹籃以細條編織,雜花置於其中,空間距離,效果極強,反映畫家探索同一畫題之不同表現手法。
又據畫家家屬提供資料,劉曦林著〈中國名畫家全集 ─ 蔣兆和〉書中,所刊本幅照片,由蔣兆和先生提供。他習慣為早期作品留下攝影紀錄,部分佚失之作,因而免於湮沒。本幅未重新面世前,亦因此得以留下紀錄。

美國私人珍藏蔣兆和四十年代精品(編號1245-1246)
在二十世紀中國畫壇的人物畫創作中,蔣兆和風格獨樹一幟,以寫實技巧反映現實,體現了偉大人道主義之深刻思想性。其創作高峰期約於一九三六年至四八年,技巧與內容、西方素描與傳統筆墨的互融,都取得出色的成果,被喻為二十世紀中國現實主義繪畫的偉大作品之一 —〈流民圖〉亦於這段期間面世。
因其作品表現手法與傳統迥異,內容集中反映民間基層生活,有別於一般欣賞口味,且兵火離亂,早期作品多有流失毀損,傳世者數量有限。惟如此獨特之風格,卻引起來華外籍人士格外關注,筆下不少作品為他們所得,日後離華回國,遂攜返所居地,作品因此得以保存。近十載以來,不少早期畫作重新面世,引起藝術界廣大關注,對蔣氏藝術地位重新評價。
本輯作品即近期重新見於海外收藏者。原藏者乃英籍人士,上世紀三十年代初為荷蘭皇家殼牌公司駐華人員,於滇緬公路上從事資源運輸工作。二戰爆發,被調往印度,隸屬英屬印度陸軍,期間與美籍軍中護士相識並結縭。戰後返中國,四九年撤出,定居紐約。北平居停期間,因夫人甚好蔣兆和畫藝,與其頗有往來,約於四六至四八年間,直接選購作品數幀。即使遷居多次,仍一直張懸廳堂,日後方留付兒輩。
