註：按圖錄所示，本幅寫於一九八九年，特為參加是次展覽而製。「南天門」即京劇劇目之「走雪山」，內容乃明代吏部尚書曹正邦遭權監魏忠賢構陷，滿門遇害，僅老僕曹福護主玉姐逃脫，主僕同往大同投親，遇大雪，曹福凍死，玉姐則得救。

據朗紹君教授研究所得：林風眠晚年戲劇人物題材中，屢以「南天門」入畫，畫面大致保留早期結構及形象模式，手法卻趨表現主義化，色調趨向沉鬱强烈、筆墨趨向强悍恣縱，戲曲藝術之精緻典雅、虛擬想像、空靈寫意，以至絢麗的裝飾性，幾乎都消失了，而變成畫家宣泄內在世界的符號及中介。
