Condition

Overall in good condition, with various ink print marks at image top as inherent to the artist's intention. There are very minor foxing spots scattered throughout, evident on paper beneath the gauze. Framed dimension: 148 by 215 cm; 58¼ by 84⅝ in.

楊詰蒼1956年生於廣東佛山,以其非比尋常的水墨技法著稱,乃中國概念藝術先鋒。1969年前後,他在文革的熾熱時期開始學習書畫裝裱、書法、民間藝術以及傳統水墨繪畫。他於廣州美術學院國畫系畢業後,於1982年至1989年留校任教,同時潛心學道習襌,這段經歷對他的藝術理念及創作風格帶來深遠影響。楊氏於1989年移居歐洲,經歷人生中的重要轉變,同年更參與法國巴黎龐畢度中心的傳奇展覽「大地魔術師」。他首度展出的四幅《千層墨》系列巨型作品與眾不同,一鳴驚人,顛覆了建立在歐洲中心藝術史觀上的策展討論,引起強烈反響。楊氏將中國傳統媒介與極富概念性的創作過程的巧妙結合,更奠定了其作為中國概念藝術先鋒的重要地位。

此幅作品為楊氏於1990年為其首個海外個展所作,同樣來自《千層墨》系列,並榮獲波洛克·克萊斯勒基金獎,表彰其紙本創作的藝術成就。此系列作品純粹以墨、水與宣紙為媒材,透過層層疊疊、不斷重複地在宣紙上施墨,創出奇異獨特的紋理,與紙本融為一體。宣紙吸飽墨汁,形成濃黑表面,呈現似雕塑般的立體之感,墨色更幾近明亮反光。如此紋理豐富的畫作猶如「歷時逾一個半月的行為表演」。重複的創作過程,締造出光亮耀目的效果,體現出藝術家修習的道學與禪宗佛理,如他就1989年巴黎展覽所言,此作「展示歷史,呈現空間,而不只是簡單的平面。」1
