1966年生，朱偉成長於北京的軍人家庭。童年時期文化大革命的政治鬥爭方興未艾，其藝術風格深受這段歷史影響。朱偉為自己的作品注入對文化身份及政治局勢的敏銳觀察，風趣機智，充滿飽富文學內涵的辛辣諷刺。儘管他自認性格內向，不擅社交，無法融入繁囂的生活，其作品卻訴說著不同的故事；他的作品尖銳地反映了中國現實和社會狀況，基調幽默，卻流露出直白的批判。

朱偉在《大白薯一號》裡畫了一個體型巨大的白薯，如同受萬方崇拜的珍品。畫作由他的招牌紅絲鑲邊，中央赫然一個引人注目的白薯，顏色明豔，描畫細緻入微，背景則是傳統中式水紋。宣紙在彩墨裡反覆沖洗、浸潤，再畫上不同紋理，讓畫紙表面凹凸有致，呈現古舊質感，可見藝術家高超的技巧與對傳統的尊敬。然而作品的構圖與整體用色卻體現了朱偉的敏銳才思：大眾主要食糧白薯竟被賦予更高價值，成為精神養分的來源；而它的形狀與漸變色調跟台灣地形圖極為相似。
