中國知名當代藝術家王勁松1963年生於哈爾濱，過去三十年來不斷探索水墨、油畫、裝置、攝影及影像藝術。王氏畢業於杭州浙江美術學院國畫系，早期的油畫作品是當時中國玩世現實主義與政治普普藝術運動中的代表作，然而其最為人熟知的還是水墨作品。王勁松於世界各地廣泛參與當代中國先鋒藝術展覽如「中國前衛藝術：藝術文化反潮流」（1993年）、「後八九中國新藝術」（1993年）以及「由內向外：新中國藝術」（1998年）等。
藝術家形容在創作這一系列作品時，水墨畫評判標準備受爭議。當時的嚴格準則列明如何透過構圖、筆法及主題來評價傳統國畫，創作亦受限於此。在此作中，王氏以三幅迥然不同的圖像解構繪畫元素，各繪有墨色線條組成的方格，以及反覆出現的「合格」紅印。《合格》三聯畫於北京藝術博物館的一個聯展首度亮相，同場還有其他實驗性繪畫作品，展現創作的不同過程與模式。
