馮明秋身兼劇作家、詩人、篆刻家及藝術家，在過去三十年間致力探索書法的藝術發展而廣為人知。他分別於1977年移居紐約和1986年至台灣後，選擇在香港定居，至今發展出逾百種書法風格。他著重每幅書畫的構圖，並強調圖像形態多於具體形象，擺脫書法歷史及語義學的束縛。其作品被廣為收藏，亦曾於世界各地的大型收藏展覽展出。在1990年代後期，他使用了在古典園林中隨處可見的形狀，比如他早期作品《雪花字》（拍品編號526）中的雙葫蘆形。
