劉國松因捨棄油畫，走上以現代技法重詮水墨藝術之路而為人熟知。1967年，他開始將「硬邊抽象畫」簡潔俐落的幾何形狀，糅合創新水墨筆法與拼貼式構圖而融成新作。此等畫作常見方中有圓，以模仿窗戶或畫中畫。藝術史家李鑄晉曾言，劉氏外遊期間，或受薩爾瓦多·達利或雷內·馬格利特等超現實主義藝術家影響。然而，劉氏卻表示真正啟發他在畫中使用圓形的，乃是中式的節日燈籠。1968年12月，太陽神8號執行太空任務，拍下《地出》一照，劉氏受其啟發，將之運用在抽象山水的月亮之中，在次年的《月之蛻變》（拍品編號506）系列中可見一斑。他在本作中以金屬色噴漆噴於紙上，使其幾何構圖閃閃生輝，與他的太空畫主題相得益彰，如《移雲追月》（拍品編號507）所見。
