款識：學王晉卿《煙江疊嶂圖》畫法。仿古之道，得神為上，形為下。以形似為論，此何與於《煙江圖》。苟會其意則未嘗不十合五六也。簡齋詩云「意足不求顏色似，前身相馬九分皋」，庶幾得之。丁巳（1917）仲冬，西津顧麟士。鈐印：鶴逸、麟士之印
題畫心：蘇文忠謂唐人王摩詰、李思訓之流，畫山水峰麓自成變態。雖蕭然有出塵之姿，然頗以雲物閒之。作浮雲杳靄與孤鴻落照，於滅沒於江天之外，舉世宗之，而唐人之典型盡矣，知古人作畫不以烘托煙雲為上。其題王晉卿《煙江疊嶂圖》既云「山耶，雲耶，遠莫知矣」，乃接之云「但見兩崖蒼蒼，暗絕谷中，有百道飛來泉，縈林絡，石隱復見。下赴谷口為莽川，則知是圖之幽奇深邃，不徒以江天空闊為妙也」。晉卿此圖早歸御府，仿之者亦祗能懸揣意象，正不必規規於形似。西津以元筆而追宋法，宜其精妙乃爾。維樸。鈐印：詩孫

Following the painterly style of Wang Jinqing's Misty Rivers and Layered Ridges.
When Imitating the old masters, the best way is to capture the essence, verisimilitude is something of much less importance. Comparing this work with Misty Rivers and Layered Ridges as a paradigm, this painting seems to have captured fifty or sixty percent of the resemblance. Jianzhai has a line that says: "As long as the essence suffices, it is not necessary to match the appearance, just like the legendary man Jiufanggao who knew how to select and judge the great steeds", which is probably a very fitting analogy.
