拍品資料及來源

This figure is sensitively modelled in the style of He Chaozong, also indicated by the apocryphal mark on the reverse, the highly celebrated master potter of Dehua of the late Ming dynasty. According to the Gazetteer of Quanzhou Prefecture of 1763, He Chaozong excelled in creating Buddhist figures and these were “transmitted and treasured [everywhere] under heaven”. Although He Chaozong is known to have been active during the late Ming dynasty, the exact life dates of this master potter remain debated.

A figure of this type, also bearing an apocryphal He Chaozong mark, but the hair pulled into a high topknot, was sold in our New York rooms, 21st January, 1972, lot 227. Compare also a He Chaozong marked figure of Guanyin, but with her concealed hands resting on her raised knee and hair in a topknot, sold at Christie’s New York, 22nd March 1991, lot 599.
