exquisitely potted of rich reddish-brown stoneware suffused with quartz to create the 'pear-skin' appearance, the facetted compressed globular body set with a curved spout and a loop handle at the angled shoulders, the raised flat cover surmounted by a semi-circular looped knop, inscribed to the exterior in ancient script with an inscription reading 'Shutao made this hu vessel to be treasured and used for ever' and dated Jiaqing yihai year (corresponding to 1815), the base of the handle impressed with a square seal reading Pengnian, the base impressed with a square seal reading Amantuoshi

Condition
On the edge of the cover there is a minor area of approx 1cm which appears to have been touched up, probably to cover a minor flake. There is a shallow 0.2cm nick to the interior of the mouth of the teapot. Otherwise good overall condition.

扁石壺簡雅脫俗，屬清代宜興名壺，記載著陳曼生，即陳鴻壽，力圖復興宜興製陶傳統。陳氏原籍浙江錢塘，精書畫，1812年赴任溧陽知縣三年。壺身紀年嘉慶乙亥（1815年），此壺乃陳氏委造，楊彭年製壺，郭頻迦銘識，均為一時之選，銘文記載當時一場溧陽茶會，壺底並銘與席文人名錄。

陳曼生任知縣期間，試圖重振宜興陶業，曾大量委製陶器，用以轉贈或販售，此壺銘文記錄同款茶壺，共造1379件。陳氏亦繪稿設計新穎壺式，並提倡陶人與藏家銘刻名款於壺上，羅桂祥於專文〈從有年款的作品看宜興紫砂陶的歷代發展〉，《宜興陶藝》，香港藝術館，香港，1981年，頁48，提及「陳曼生對紫砂茶壺的發展，有極深遠的影響」。
龐元濟、Thomas Y.P. Lee 遞藏一件造形類同扁石壺，亦為陳曼生委託楊彭年造，錄於 《Zisha. The Purple Sand of China》，紐約，2005年，圖版12，2010年12月1日售於香港佳士得，編號3096。並參考其他陳氏委託楊氏造壺，器形相異，刊載於《宜興陶藝》，前述出處，編號53、55-57；還有一例展出於《I-Hsing Ware》，China House Gallery，1977年，編號15。
