青玉，色純潤澤，拋光細膩，大面積鈣化呈雞骨白。玉蟬雙面工，簡潔爽利的陰線刻，淋漓生動地表現五官、羽翅和腹部，俗稱「漢八刀」工藝。

漢代「視死如生」，盛行葬玉，即專門為保存屍體而製造的隨葬玉器，主要有玉衣、玉塞、玉琀（多作蟬形）和玉握（作璜形或豚形）四類。在古人心中，蟬棲於高枝，飲甘露而生，寓意高潔；蟬亦能蜕化不死，往而復生，因而成為漢代葬玉的重要種類。作為口琀的玉蟬沒有穿孔，這在考古已有證實。
