The figure is in overall good condition with just minor natural flaws to the stone and tiny nicks that may have been lightly polished, including one lotus petal and possibly the tips of the lotus leaf. The catalogue illustration is a tinge redder than the actual colour of the stone.

白玉質，局部沁斑。立體圓雕童子。童子側身半臥，手持荷花，荷葉翻捲，荷花半開。頭髮稀疏，左右兩開，八字眉，眼、鼻、嘴凸起。身穿馬甲，上飾斜方格錦紋。

此器雕琢簡練，線條俐落，神態俏皮可愛。

宋朝玉雕多見持荷童子，有說此乃源於佛教故事「鹿母蓮花生子」，寓意吉祥。北宋《東京夢華錄》卷8記載：「七夕前三五日，車馬盈市，羅綺滿街，旋折未開荷花，都人善假做雙頭蓮，取元一時，提攜而歸，路人往往嗟愛。又小兒須買新荷葉執之，蓋效顰磨喝樂。」反映了當時的社會生活。
