skilfully worked in openwork in the form of pierced rocks with lingzhi and prunus florets borne on gnarled branches issuing from the crevices, the reverse similarly rendered with further thin twigs bearing a prunus blossom and small prunus buds, the stone of an even pale celadon colour with subtle russet specks

The brushrest is in overall good condition with typical small bruises and nicks to the edges of the carvings and the fragile extremities, the most notable a minute chip to the tip of a twig at the left of the brushrest.

A white jade brushrest carved in openwork with flowers, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, was included in the Exhibition of Imperial Court in the Forbidden City, Seibu Museum of Art, Tokyo, 1985, cat. no. 43; and another was included in the exhibition Chinese Jades form Han to Ch’ing, Asia House Gallery, New York, 1980, cat. no. 113; and a fourth was sold in our New York rooms, 17th September 2003, lot 137.
