with deep rounded sides resting on a tapered foot, boldly painted in a rich dark iron-red tone, the exterior with four five-clawed dragons writhing in various poses amidst scrolling clouds above tumultuous crashing waves, the dragons with sinuous scaly bodies and long legs terminating in sharp claws, divided talismanic roundels inscribed in Daoist magic script, all between double-line borders at the rim and the foot, the interior centred with a medallion enclosing a ferocious five-clawed dragon in profile amongst scrolling clouds, encircled by an undulating foliate-scroll band issuing lingzhi heads at the rim, the base inscribed with a six-character reign mark in underglaze blue

Condition

The bowl is in rather good condition except that the glaze of the mouthrim is worn or polished. There are also a few stained pinholes to the foot as well as a faint firing line from the footrim. There are surface scratches and slight wear to the iron-red glaze while the wear is most significant to the centre of the interior well/roundel of the dragon as expected.

此嘉靖年款白地紅彩五爪龍紋盌,實屬罕珍,外壁所繪道教紋飾尤顯獨特,足見世宗皇帝之虔誠信仰與崇道實踐。外壁圈內所繪紋樣似中國篆隸,然難以辨識,或為寓意平安之符咒。古代中國,行扶乩之法,「乩」,為神靈之指示;扶乩占卜,溯古問今,與西方之乩板相似。扶乩,以無意識,或被動寫成之文字,達人神相通,嘉靖帝尤鍾此術。

扶乩之過程,由一人或數人扶「T」形或「Y」形木製工具,循神靈指示,於沙盤、灰燼或其他相似物上寫出提示,以答祈求者之疑。嘉靖十九年(1540年),嘉靖帝於紫禁城內興建乩仙台,以決治國之策,求長生之道。(參見尹翠琪,《西苑洞天:嘉靖御用瓷器的道教紋飾》,載《機暇明道:懷海堂藏明代中晚期官窯瓷器》,香港中文大學文物館,香港,2012年,頁53-61)。據J.J.M. de Groot撰,《The Religious System of China》中〈Ming History〉部所載,嘉靖帝賞罰官僚,皆遵神諭,而此神諭唯由道士方可解讀破譯(見J.J.M. de Groot撰,《The Religious System of China》,萊登,卷6,頁1314)。

嘉靖帝崇仙尚道,聞名於世,御窰瓷器多繪道教主題紋飾,如八卦紋、草書一筆壽字紋,盤曲呈長青樹形態,而本品所飾符咒圖案匠心別具,實屬罕有。台北國立故宮博物院藏一相似青花龍紋盌例,同落嘉靖款,但其圓圈內楷書「萬壽清平」四字(圖見《福壽康寧:吉祥圖案瓷器特展圖錄》,國立故宮博物院,台北,1995年,編號12)。此類器所繪五爪神龍,象徵君王,遂本品與前例相似,寓意君王福喜盈積。

本品紋樣,以釉上鐵紅彩單繪,較為少見,常例多作青花礬紅彩或五彩。北京故宮博物院藏一相似白地紅彩龍紋盌,造型有異,外壁繪雙五爪龍紋,內素紋,破損後經鋦釘修復,錄耿寶昌編,《故宮博物院藏古陶瓷資料選萃》,北京,2005年,卷1,圖版156;書中亦載,嘉靖一朝,此類釉上紅彩紋例極罕。可比一同式盌例,存東京出光美術館,展並刊於《嘉靖、萬曆の赤絵》,東洋陶磁美術館,大阪,1995年,編號4;再比一類例,為 Seligman 舊藏,後為 Riesco 遞藏,曾兩度售於倫敦蘇富比,分別為1954年5月11日,編號48,及1970年6月23日,編號48。另存一相似例,圖見 John Ayers,《Chinese Ceramics ‧ The Koger Collection》,倫敦,1985年,圖版79,以及康蕊君,《玫茵堂中國陶瓷》,倫敦,1994-2010年,卷4,編號1686。

一件萬曆年款紅彩龍紋盌例,可資比對,藏於台灣國立故宮博物院,錄葉佩蘭,《美哉陶瓷 7‧五彩名瓷》,台北,1996年,圖版23及52。亦有一嘉靖年款青花龍紋盌例,紋飾與本品相若,同出 Koger 典藏,圖載 Ayers,前述出處,圖版57。

釉上礬紅彩雲龍紋繪於高足盌上,落有年款,或僅見宣德朝孤例,為景德鎮御窰厰遺址出土,展於《景德鎮出土元明官窰瓷器》,炎黃藝術館,北京,1999年,編號210。
