梁巨廷出生於廣州，1948年移居香港。他曾經跟隨王無邪學習平面設計（見514號拍品），並師從現代革新水墨大師呂壽琨學習繪畫。1974至1990年間，梁巨廷於香港理工大學任教，所授科目包括木版畫、平面設計、色彩理論及三維設計等。他現任香港正形設計學校董事、香港康樂及文化事務署名譽顧問以及香港藝術發展局視覺藝術顧問。
梁氏是香港「一畫會」的成員，這一先鋒藝術協會旨在推廣新水墨運動，他積極探索以版畫、雕塑及油畫等方式打破傳統規限。梁氏是學習設計出身，自然更加關注作品結構及構圖。1979年，他回歸中國水墨繪畫，常將自己的傳統山水畫作與抽象形狀及硬邊平面相結合，為作品增添幾何本質。梁氏還逐漸在作品中使用虛線，頗具宋代畫家米芾（公元1051-1107年）之風。自2006年起，梁氏創作了兩個文人石專繪系列作品——《石語》（拍品編號534）及《山石禪》，以強調自我實現的文人寫意胸懷。梁氏有言曰：「石頭中有對生活和文化亂象的模糊碎片式解讀；無需文字也能夠將故事娓娓道來。我探尋石頭的結構與紋理，將碎片信息注入我的視覺想像——符號、意義與形狀。石頭的精髓即是文人修身養性與對自我完善的追求精神。」1
