朱道平在1977年畢業於于南京藝術學院美術系，主修國畫。自1998年起任南京書畫院院長；2004年榮獲「黃賓虹藝術獎」，被認可為20世紀優秀領先畫家。
朱道平致力追求在作品中完整表達自己的思想，堅持在靈感充沛時方執筆作畫。朱氏不直接自前人畫中汲取靈感，而是將自身的回憶融入筆尖。他擅用細密的點畫法，承自清初南京名畫家梅清（1623-1697年）及石濤（1642-1707年）。他的畫以寫意粗放點線交織而成，氣勢變幻不定，與前人的筆法不無相通，一如拍品（拍品編號524及525）；然而他的構圖明顯屬於當代，下筆描繪之處溢滿畫家對金陵勝景的深刻情結。
