張氏作為知名學者，深具學院派風範，更是國內水墨藝術發展的佼佼者。他水墨媒介本身作為焦點，摒除筆觸，在九十年代創作出磅礡宏偉的《靈光》系列（拍品編號509），當時更正值中國實驗當代藝術的重要時期。意象作品系列體現革新領域發展的一大突破，於傳統以及當代世界均可尋見。藝術家曾言：「我的思考方式既不是來自中國傳統，也非源於西方藝術史。這是新式的意象形態，以圖像表達，不見筆觸，透過反覆浸染與層疊色彩展現水墨精髓，使觀者親身感受圖像本身的影響力。」¹

張羽生於天津，1988年畢業於天津工藝美術學院，曾任多本當代水墨藝術期刊主編，並為天津交通職業學院藝術設計系副教授，現於北京生活工作。在過去二十多年來，張氏的作品於中國及海外廣泛展出，當中包括大都會藝術博物館、愛爾蘭當代美術館、路易斯安那現代美術館、中國美術館、上海美術館及台北市立美術館。
