Condition

The work is in good condition overall. Upon close observation, there is indication of minute media accretions near the woman with basket (center). No restoration is found under ultraviolet light inspection. Framed.

Fernando Cueto Amorsolo, the first National Artist of the Philippines, undoubtedly stands as the most prolific and influential artist in the history of the country, raising the level of genre painting to new heights. His idyllic renditions of common folk in rural settings celebrate the soul of his nation. Enamored by the simple and unadulterated beauty found in the circadian lives of Filipino villagers, Amorsolo rejected western ideals of beauty and sought to represent the true Filipina dalaga, or girl. Dissatisfied with how Filipina women were portrayed with westernized facial features in the media, Amorsolo painted his maidens with rounded faces, vivacious eyes, and youthful skin. With bright smiles, these villagers radiate with pure joy as they undergo their daily routines, gather mangoes and wash their clothes. Upon viewing these two works, it is evident that this prominent artist was a maestro in depicting form and in the use of light. Bathed in natural sunlight, the people are bathed in a warm glow and the paintings seem to exhale with the fresh breeze of the tropical alfresco.
