趙無極初抵巴黎的頭幾年,意欲在西方現代藝術的薰陶之下,尋找一種具有開創性的繪畫語言,並試圖除卻中國繪畫的影響。一如畢卡索和賈柯梅蒂,他畫中的人物開始出現曾啓發了二十世紀偉大藝術家們的原始主義特徵;而他畫中的房舍,也簡化至由寥寥數筆所構成,如亨利‧米修所形容的「透明的房子」。1951年,趙無極首次在瑞士美術館中見到保羅‧克利的畫作,而說:
克利的世界與眾不同,充滿詩意,見人所未見,它是一座橋樑,通向一個我尋找的世界,但我把它當成找到另一條路的捷徑。
同年,他作了極具代表性的《無題》(拍品編號1003),曾出現於石版畫中的透明屋房,至此變得更為清脆、果斷、和銳利。淡墨的暈染營造著古樸的氛圍,中國繪畫中的遠、中、近景,於此清晰可見。畫中存在如同中國繪畫的之字形構圖,引領觀者跟隨前景挑著擔子的人物,一覽村鎮風光以至遠山,和更遠處禿樹的枝椏,同遊此一寫意的異域之景。而在另一件亦作於五十年代初期的人物畫《無題》(拍品編號1004)中,趙無極以細膩的筆觸勾勒貌似其妻子謝景蘭之人物。在1956年蘭蘭離開趙無極之前,曾是趙無極靈感的來源。此件作品承襲著受原始主義影響的人物面容與身形,在水彩暈染的細緻背景之中,以層遞的線條緊密交疊出殷切之情感。
