李鐵夫乃首位進入西方藝術學校研習的中國人，標誌著中國現代藝術之開端。二十世紀初年，李鐵夫在紐約師從美國印象派大師蔡斯（William Meritt Chase）和薩金特（John Sargent），同時為孫中山籌建同盟會紐約分會，1915年獲孫中山與黃興在海外登報表揚，「洵足與歐美大畫家並駕齊驅，誠我國美術界之巨子」，至1930年歸國。1932至34年，李鐵夫卜居香港九龍土瓜灣，此時他以創作水彩為主，往往從土瓜灣徒步至當年已屬郊區的獅子山下的黃大仙竹園一帶，以及獅子山北面的沙田寫生，《黃大仙》（拍品編號5068）與《獅子山》（拍品編號5069）正屬此時之作。1991年，香港藝術中心與廣州美術學院舉行「李鐵夫作品展」，即有展出相同時期的香港風景水彩。《黃大仙》與《獅子山》最早由香港早期藏家李祖佑醫生收藏。李祖佑早年在香港修讀醫科，後赴英倫進修，1924年返港執業，六○年代中逝世。李氏雅中國藝術，尤嗜金石，與香江藝壇中人來往密切，書畫收藏頗豐，香港大學至今設有李祖佑獎學金，港大馮平山圖書館亦曾購入其藏書，內含印譜219種，作為重要館藏。
