宇宙無垠,水墨出新
劉國松畢生致力革新中國藝術,其於1957年在台灣發起「五月畫會」,推動光復以後的前衛美術風潮,初時以西方油彩畫布為媒材,六〇年代以後開始回歸水墨紙本,革新國畫;1966年,藝術家獲得美國洛克斐勒三世奬學金(The JDR 3rd Foundation)支持,遍遊西方,視野益發開闊,其親歷美國「阿波羅十一號」登月計劃之成功,更啟發了「太空畫」系列之誕生。《一個東南西北人》乃此系列之早期精品,藝術家以西方現代科學宇宙觀,改變中國傳統哲學宇宙觀,嶄新的「旦」字形構圖擺脫數千年來「天圓地方」之說,重塑太陽、月亮(天)與地球(地)的關係;在知性的西方意識形態上,融鑄感性的東方寫意精神,大筆狂草式的筆觸百步九折,由上而下、由淺至深,營造出遠近濃淡的層次。橘紅色的淡墨暈染與狂草抽象的粗曠表現,交織出虛實相生的意境,鋪陳山水氣韻,使作品出於科學而入於藝術,始於時代而臻於恒昌。
劉國松對水墨具有強烈的反叛意識,除了攝取抽象表現主義神,更主張「有墨無筆」,從方法學上摒棄「筆墨」傳統。畫面正中以噴槍造成銀亮暈染,象徵宇宙中的大氣層,分隔太陽與地球表面,背後隱現月球, 視野神秘深邃,讓觀者在凝神游思之間,進入畫家內心世界;「一個東西南北人」唯「太空畫」系列之精方能當之,既有自畫像之意味,亦代表藝術家對於自己作品之好評。高掛上方的紅太陽拼貼朱底白文印章,外沿銳利分明,以傳統呼應美國戰後風行一時的硬邊藝術;藝術家以旭日自比,寓意東方昇起的一股力量,勢將為中國乃至世界畫壇帶來嶄新面貌。四十五年後的今日,劉國松當之無愧地成為新水墨的領軍大纛,可說以畢生之毅力,實踐當年的自我期許。
