This work is in overall very good condition. There are two small paint chips near the upper left corner. There is no apparent inpainting under UV light examination.

引領東方文化投入抽象表現主義

趙春翔在國立藝專接受正規藝術教育,並以林風眠所主張的「融和中西」,與潘天壽所標舉的「傳統出新」對他影響最深。趙春翔在1956年前往西班牙,再於1958年奔赴紐約,很大程度上是受到林風眠的影響,希望倣效恩師親炙西方殿堂,甚至更進一步卓立彼邦。藝術家初到紐約之時,抽象表現主義正如日中天,在開放熾烈創作氛圍中,趙春翔全情投入,不但與抽象表現大師克萊茵(Franz Kline)往還,更獲得古根漢姆博物館賞識,提出個展邀請。抽象表現主義不以傳統為羈絆,重視畫家本能與運動書寫,趙春翔藉此契機,解放熟練已久的書法基礎,滙通中國畫論之「氣韻生動」(南朝謝赫「六法」之首),由此宣告: 「你應去冒險,站立在時代的前面,去創作,去思想,去嘗試;本著人性的愛美天性,你絕不會寂寞的!」《抽象》正是趙春翔作品的第二形態。

白熱雷動,墨之風暴

《抽象》的畫面縱橫擺闔,盡顯美式繪畫的狂放大膽;與此同時,藝術家不忘體現中國美學元素,以黑、灰、白階油彩,構成水墨格調,厚重的玄黑如黃鐘大呂,作為畫面基底,上面覆蓋的銀灰飛揚跋扈,如柳葉飛箔之瀟灑靈動,兩者之間突入一道強而有力的橘紅,在大型筆刷的反覆交戰之下,炙熱成一團翻滾白焰,經歷半個世紀,觀眾似乎仍能親歷其境,觀察那場血脈沸騰的創作過程。趙春翔對於色彩運用別有心得,曾經提到:「顏色不可使之過稀,稀則無宏壯之感,反趨浮薄之象。」本作的油彩堆疊豐厚,卻同時刻意作部份稀釋,形成滴流效果,產生偶發性的美感,讓「時間」亦參與完成作品。六○年代以後,藝術家以壓克力水墨紙本為主要媒材,油彩畫布作品因此格外稀少,與本作尺幅相近的《抽象1號》在香港蘇富比即曾經創下港幣2,887,500之高價,足見藏家對此系列之追逐與珍愛。
