古典與神聖之光芒
林風眠的仕女作品聞名中外,其造型千鑄百煉,表現出藝術家心目中完美女性的形象。藝術史學家丁羲元扼要地指出:「舒美流暢的線條,富艷的配景,人物則是經歷提煉的美人樣,修眉、文鼻、鳳眼 、櫻桃口而鵝蛋臉。一般地均氣質高雅、既是古典的,又具現代美。這些仕女圖,寄托著畫家的心緒,理想和審美追求,有著曲折的現實寄喻。」(《林風眠論稿》,原載於《名家翰墨》一九九二年一月刊,第廿四期)林風眠對於仕女主題之鍾愛,與他生命中三位重要女性不無關係-他的母親、妻子和女兒,於他至為重要,卻因為命運而終於天各一方,使作為兒子、丈夫和父親的他,因此透過繪畫表現對她們的愛,作為現實生活中的補償,亦即上面丁氏所指的「曲折的現實寄喻」。
林風眠的筆下仕女,總是散發著理想和古典之美,端坐於香花供果的室內,投射出自己所欲給予家人的平安和幸福,《紫衣仕女》除了反映出上述特徵,畫中仕女手持蓮花,更是別具深意:若綜合林風眠作品的符號語言,「蓮花」經常具有神話和宗教意義,譬如他筆下的南海觀音和敦煌飛天,必定手持蓮花;他具有自傳意義的作品「寶蓮燈」,更以主角沉香太子劈山救母,呼應自己幼年保護母親的往事,可見本作仕女不止是凡人,而是具有神聖、聖潔意義的女性;作品背景以淺粉紫色調為主,呼應主角衣裳之色調,而不至喧賓奪主;從左至右作「深-淺-深」垂直排列的垂簾,不僅可見西方幾何構圖之影響,其巧借背景光芒灑落前方仕女,點亮神聖氣質的手法,亦緊扣了作品主題。
