Lord Valentia travelled on a British mission from India to Abyssinia to secure a port on the Red Sea, accompanied by his secretary Henry Salt, after whose drawings the engravings were made. The first volume deals with India and Sri Lanka - with sections on Benares, Calcutta, Lucknow, etc. - the second two volumes cover Abyssinia, Egypt and the Red Sea, including much relating to Mocha and Jeddah.
