the dark brown lacquer panels well-carved and painted,  one side depicting the investiture of Liu Bei as Prince of Hanzhong, seated on a high alter, facing south, in a wooded, mountainous landscape with a gathering of loyal officers and warriors mounted on horseback, the reverse with a scenic panorama of Hangzhou's West Lake including the six bridges of Su Dongpo, all enclosed within borders of roundels on a diaper ground or key-fret and flanked by panels enclosing precious objects, birds and flowers, and mythical animals

There are repairs to splits on the panels, primarily vertical splits from the top and bottom. There has been restoration to lost lacquer along the edges, particularly where the panels are hinged together. Chipping, lifting and loss of overall lacquer and pigment decoration mostly restored with overpaint and stabilized with a varnish that has yellowed. The carving on the screen is very fine and the colors more vibrant than illustrated in the catalogue.
