明初青花大盤,上承蒙元之風,然整體構圖去繁化簡,與元代的密舖滿飾大相逕庭 。如洪武之時,前朝常有之藍地白花已再不復見,多飾花卉庭院小景等。十四世紀風行一時的花繁枝盛之牡丹或蓮紋,至十五世紀初,改由細膩多姿的折枝花卉代之,此乃瓷藝紋飾發展史上的一大創新。如此盤內壁所飾折技花卉,圈以捲延枝草,騰出更多白地,每六種花卉為一組,重複一回共繪兩組,是以相同的花卉落在對角兩端,遙相呼應。這類永樂大盤,雖有不同紋飾搭配,但如此盤折沿以簡約線條勾勒,寥寥數筆便描出纏枝蓮花,瓣葉分明卻不形繁褥,充分體現永樂一朝強調疏朗之風。
伊斯坦堡托普卡比宮殿博物館收藏中,有與此器形、紋飾均十分接近之大盤,圖載於康蕊君,《Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul》,卷2,倫敦,1986年,圖版602。阿德比爾聖廟舊藏也有一例,現存德黑蘭伊朗國家博物館,收錄於《Oriental Ceramics. The World's Great Collections》,卷4,東京,1981年,圖版189。日本五島美術館藏盤,則可見於《龍泉集芳:創業七十周年記念》,卷1,東京,1976年,圖版758。底特律藝術學院也有類例,曾展於《The Arts of the Ming Dynasty》,底特律藝術學院,底特律,1952年,編號99。香港蘇富比也曾售出兩例相類大盤,分別為1996年4月30日,編號325,以及1988年5月17日,編號25。香港佳士得2003年7月7日也拍出一盤,編號649。還有一盤,屬 L.A. Basmadjieff 及 Reach 家族舊藏,曾展出於《Chinese Art from the Reach Family Collection》,Eskenazi,倫敦,1989年,編號35,又曾四次在蘇富比售出,最近一次在香港,2009年4月8日,編號1670。
尚有其他永樂年間所製青花大盤,其紋飾配搭、器形與此稍有不同,可作參考,如是次拍賣另一菱式大盤,紋飾與此極為接近,然其折沿密飾海水,與盤內疏朗之感對比強烈,拍品編號3630。拍賣還有一永樂青花葡萄紋圓形大盤,拍品編號3638。更多關於這類大盤的燒造及用途的討論,請閱上述品號之文章。
如欲追源溯流,則可參考元代器形相類之青花大盤,本場拍賣巧有一例,盤心畫秀石蕉葉等,繁飾滿綴,內壁以青花漩渦烘托白色模印纏枝牡丹,折沿添繪海水,微波細浪,見拍品編號3636,與本品風格相比,立見元明兩朝繁簡之別。
