宣德朝窰事興盛，創新燒製了一批珍貴的青花大盌，如本品飾纏枝牡丹紋者，更為珍罕。此盌造形渾厚，器壁厚度近一公分，胎體均勻，窰燒技術高超。這批青花大盌僅短暫見於宣德朝，稍舜即竭，清朝未見續燒。此類青花大盌多繪單種或各類花卉、靈芝或雙龍紋，口沿下書「大明宣德年製」款。

宣德青花大盌紋飾均繪於外壁，盌內施白釉，其用途迄今尚無定論。《天民樓藏瓷》，香港藝術館，1987年，頁53，筆者討論了此類盌的用途。筆者道，此類盌的用途眾說紛紜。有人認為它是骰盌，供宮中擲骰賭博之用；一說為筆洗，書案洗筆之用；又雲其堅厚的器壁，正是鬥蟋蟀的戰場；還說是果盌，盛水果之用。在所見盌例中，有些盌內確實有使用過的痕跡。

牡丹素有「國色天香」之美譽，象徵富貴吉祥、繁榮昌盛。2016年初，北京故宮舉辦之「故宮洛陽牡丹展」及「故宮博物院牡丹題材文物展」配合牡丹題材的文物一起展出，見《紫禁城雜誌》，2016年，期6。裝飾紋飾中牡丹題材比蓮花題材用較多，參見康蕊君，〈Plant Motifs of Chinese Porcelain, Examples from the Topkapi Saray Identified through the Bencao Gangmu, Part I〉，《Orientations》，1987年5月，頁52-65。

世界著名收藏中見數相似例，清宮舊藏一例，載於《故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集：青花釉裏紅（上）》，上海，2000年，圖版145；一藏台北故宮博物院，錄於《明代宣德官窰菁華特展圖錄》，台北，1998年，圖版48；一例為大維德基金會收藏，現貯大英博物館，見 Margaret Medley，〈Regrouping 15th Century Blue and White〉，《東方陶瓷學會彙刊》，卷34，1962-63年，圖版3a；北京大學考古文博學院藏一例，曾展於《燕園聚珍 : 北京大學賽克勒考古與藝術博物館展品選粹》，北京，1992年，編號149。

另有一例為 Morrill 舊藏，售於紐約 Doyle 拍賣2003年9月16日，編號88，該品1971年曾展於波士頓美術博物館，錄於《瑯環琳瑯．松竹堂中國御窰瓷器珍藏》，香港，2016年，圖版6；一例售香港蘇富比2002年5月7日，編號565；另一例則為里埃斯科舊藏，先後兩次售倫敦蘇富比1956年7月3日，編號62及1984年12月11日，編號321。
