  • porcelain
very finely potted with shallow rounded sides divided into twelve bracket foliations, rising from a short tapered foot to a barbed everted rim, beautifully and richly painted in shades of cobalt accented with the 'heaped and piled' effect, the interior with a central lotus bloom shown en face surrounded by blooms of camellia, lotus, chrysanthemum, mallow and pink, all wreathed by interlocked meandering stems within a barbed line border, further encircled around the sides by detached sprays of peony, chrysanthemum, pomegranate, hibiscus, morning glory and lotus, each repeated twice and paired across the dish, below a border of cresting waves emitting white foams within double-lines at the rim, the exterior painted with similar detached floral sprays within double-line borders, the base and footring left unglazed

明永樂朝為中國青花瓷歷史中的黃金時代,而此盤所繪之纏枝花卉紋飾在當朝最負盛名。永樂窰廠不僅為朝廷燒製,更兼外銷,通過官方的貿易制度出口至中東,後被仿製成陶器。相似例子珍罕,惟見於世界著名博物館及私人收藏。

十五世紀初紋飾革新,器壁始用折枝花卉紋,讓十四世紀以來繁密的纏枝蓮花或牡丹花紋飾出現了新的面貌。永樂青花,採用中東進口的鈷藍料,燒造時有自然的暈散現象,呈色鮮豔奪目,濃淡有別,層次分明。細潤致密的胎體上,留下鈷鐵結晶斑,濃處凝聚為黑色錫光,發出晶瑩通透之光澤,成為明初御製青花瓷器的時代風格。

伊斯坦堡托普卡比宮殿博物館藏一相似例,載於康蕊君,《Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul》,John Ayers 編,倫敦,1986年,卷2,圖版601。另一例為大維德基金會收藏,現貯大英博物館,錄於《Oriental Ceramics. The World's Great Collections》,卷 6,東京,1982年,圖版76。台北故宮博物藏一例,見《明代初年瓷器特展目錄》,國立故宮博物院,台北,1982年,編號38。瑞典斯德哥爾摩東亞博物館藏兩例,其一見 Jan Wirgin,《Chinese Ceramics from the Axel and Nora Lundgren Bequest》斯德哥爾摩,1978年,圖版27,編號25;另一為瑞典國王古斯塔夫六世·阿道夫舊藏,載於《Oriental Ceramics. The World's Great Collections》,卷 8,東京,1982年,圖版216。一例為 Mottahedeh 舊藏,錄於 David Howard 及 John Ayers,《China for the West, Chinese Porcelain and Other Decorative Arts for Export》,紐約,1978年,卷1,頁12,二度售於紐約蘇富比,分別為1976年3月20日,編號113及2000年9月20日,編號105。另一件可作比較的原為 F. Gordon and Elizabeth Hunter Morrill 伉儷舊藏,售於香港蘇富比2013年4月8日,編號3018。

且參考紋飾相仿但折沿飾卷蓮紋之永樂大盤,售於倫敦蘇富比1972年3月14日,編號132,後再售香港蘇富比1976年11月29日,編號463及2009年4月8日,編號1670,曾展於《Chinese Art from the Reach Family Collection》,Eskenazi,倫敦,1989年,編號35。

2014年倫敦大英博物館舉辦的《明:盛世皇朝50年》展覽中討論了中國和中東之間就青花瓷器的密切互動關係,見展覽圖錄頁86-95。
