the deep rounded sides rising to a wider rim, supported on a slightly flared tall hollow cylindrical foot tapering towards the top, the exterior decorated in iron-red with a pair of five-clawed dragons soaring sinuously amidst flames and chasing 'flaming pearls', each rendered with a ferocious expression and picked out with a pair of outstretched wings flanking the scaly body, the interior centred with a six-character seal mark within a double-square

A closely related stemcup with matching cover, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, is published in the Illustrated Catalogue of Ch’ing Dynasty Porcelain in the National Palace Museum, Tokyo, 1981, vol. 2, pl. 25; one in the Tianjin Municipal Museum of Art, is included in Tianjin shi yishu bowuguan cang ci [Porcelains from the Tianjin Municipal Museum], Hong Kong, 1993, pl. 171; another is illustrated in John Ayers, The Baur Collection, vol. 4, Geneva, 1974, pl. A640, where the author mentions another stemcup of this type lacking the cover in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and a further example without a cover, was sold in these room, 5th November 1996, lot 790.
