註:大千先生於政權轉易前夕首度踏足台灣,去國後,經常往當地旅遊、訪友和舉行展覽,直到定居於台北摩耶精舍。他一生好遊歷,足迹踏遍西歐南北美,寶島勝景自不錯過。當地名勝如合歡山、太魯閣、橫貫公路等,都轉化為他畫中的景象。阿里山亦不例外。
他取阿里山風景入畫最早見於六十年代中期,乃潑墨小品。他以「嘉義阿里山曉色為我國一奇。亦世界一奇。」以其晨曉色彩繽紛多姿,變化奇幻,極適宜潑墨潑彩技法之應用,故阿里山題材以曉色描寫為主。
八十年代初,曾以此題材寫有兩幀四尺整紙橫幅,其一色彩豐富,嶺上紅霞萬道,金光閃現;另則為本幅,畫家謂「以吾家僧繇沒骨法為此」,實以半抽象手法寫之,大片石青石綠潑灑,覆蓋畫面,礦物顏料厚重積叠,幾如寶石生輝,金色復舖於上,諸色輝映,更形燦爛耀目,再薄施白粉,似峯頂雲氣流動,畫面益見虛實相應。大千筆下縱橫,如「闢渾沌手」,令全畫氣象萬千,極盡色彩鮮艷眩目的效果,成為其阿里山作品的主調。
