海門，位於江蘇省長江流域，明清兩朝以棉產、棉商而聞名。本插屏紋飾刻畫海門港口景色，雕工細緻、栩栩如生，令人嘆為觀止。雕刻工匠捕捉亂石與驚濤之質地功力甚高，盡顯功架，足見其鬼斧神工。反之，樓閣結構分明，構圖規律，由此可證匠人可能受當時之繪畫或雕版印刷所影響。
乾隆認為玉山子插屏等器物，應承傳古代名家書畫遺風。據記載，多幅御藏之書畫已遵御旨，雕琢成器，五代名家關仝（907-960）之名作《關山行旅圖》，正是箇中典例。此品構圖和諧，正是乾隆心儀之玉雕樣式。
有一類例，刻有山間小徑，同樣銘刻詩詞，曾刊於《玉緣：德安堂藏玉》，北京故宮博物院，2004年，編號63，曾售於倫敦蘇富比1994年12月6日，編號79；另一例售於倫敦佳士得2012年11月6日，編號124；另有兩例，不帶詩文，同售於紐約佳士得，其一於1988年9月22/23日，編號245，其二售於1991年11月27日，編號162。台北國立故宮博物院藏一例，刻高士賞遊山水圖，曾展於《宮廷之雅—清代仿古及畫意玉器特展》，台北，1997年，編號67。
題詩取自乾隆《御製詩集》，第四集，卷69。
