是次呈獻的兩幅作品出自劉煒於1992至1993年所創的罕有水墨紙本系列《觀魚》。他在這段時期反思1989年的動盪時局，最終選擇足不出戶，避世隱遁。畫中題詞提示觀魚為傳統文人的閒暇樂活，藉此自省，陶冶性情，印證劉氏對雅逸生活的追求。然而，畫中人物看來不安而疏離，盯著缸中同樣慌張失措的魚。文人雅士講究的理想情操與劉氏家中的現實情況大相徑庭，為視覺及精神都帶來戲劇性體驗，使觀者得以享受其中，自我詮釋

一位美國私人收藏家兼藝術家對劉煒全面的創作技巧以及別具社會意識的藝術追求深感共鳴，並於1993年直接從劉煒手中購得本作。劉煒於1989年畢業於北京中央美術學院版畫系，隨即轉攻油畫。劉煒與方力鈞被公認為中國「玩世現實主義」兩大代表，其作品毫不留情地諷刺中國自九十年代以來急速工業化和現代化下的各種社會面貌。他是首位連續兩屆獲邀參與威尼斯雙年展的中國藝術家，其作品獲多間著名博物館展出及收藏，包括M+希克藏品、大都會藝術博物館、成都當代美術館以及舊金山現代藝術博物館。
