董陽孜出生於上海，八歲起練習顏真卿楷書和魏碑書法。1966年畢業於台灣師範大學並獲學士學位，1970年獲得美國馬薩諸塞大學阿默斯特分校油畫及陶瓷專業碩士學位，期間接觸不少其他藝術門類。在隨後數年間，她定居台灣，並選擇以水墨畫作媒介，對當代藝術展開熱切探討。其書法形態大膽創新，富表現力，因此成為享譽國際的書法家。

董陽孜倡導古典哲學，從中國歷史的道德背景中汲取靈感，創造出獨特的草書風格。她筆下的字句每每抒發個人思緒，以其生活和行為原則啟發他人。《既來之，則安之》（拍品編號527）取材自《論語》格言，意指隨遇而安。董陽孜不受困於傳統水墨畫法，常為舞台表演創作大型書畫，並與他人合作，為流行文化設計作品，當中包括周杰倫及陳綺貞等藝人。她總是強調書法是一種多元化的藝術形式，並能引起現代人共鳴，曾有言：「我是學藝術的，我不是書法家。我如果只是書法家，書法就死掉了！」¹
