Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. There is evidence of handling and wear along the edges of the canvas, noticeably along the bottom edge where an area of soiling is visible 17 cm from the left edge. The colors are fresh and the impasto is thick and nicely preserved. There are signs of bubble remnants in areas where the impasto is thickest, which is inherent to the artist's working method. There are 2 dashes of fine craquelure 12 cm from the right edge and 10 cm from the bottom edge and a small area of accretion in the upper right quadrant 4 cm from the right edge and 4.5 cm from the top edge. Under UV light there is no evidence of restoration. Framed.

山姆·弗朗西斯是第二代抽象表現主義藝術家中聲名最為響亮的一位,其藝術生涯漸為人熟知,所帶來的影響亦漸深遠,重要性不言而喻。弗朗西斯與其同代藝術家受前輩馬克·羅斯科與克里夫·斯蒂等人影響,將色彩在畫布上的表現帶到了全新的境界。此幅《墜落》作於1987年,是藝術家大膽運用色彩的出色典例。弗朗西斯大膽使用厚重的顏料覆蓋畫布,大片淡黃、猩紅、藏青色躍入眼簾,幾抹趣味十足的粉紅與淺綠色讓構圖更加完整。畫作色彩所帶來的強大衝擊力和滴痕令人回想起傑克森·波拉克的滴畫法。1980年代時,弗朗西斯已經摒棄自己於七十年代採用的矩陣構圖,重新回到五十年代的多色調,並在畫布上留白。
