Condition

Good condition overall. Some restorations to the goat's proper left horn and to all four legs. The seated Putto proper right uphold hand finger's reattached and partly missing, his proper right arm reattached, chip to the toe tip. The standing Putto : restored break to his proper right ankle, a chip to the toe tip of his left foot. Restoration to the edges of polychrome marble base

Catalogue Note

Plusieurs groupes d'enfants jouants de compositions similaires au nôtre - tous ornés d'un socle chantourné en marbre blanc et vert antique comparable - ont été associés à l'oeuvre du sculpteur napolitain Giuseppe Sanmartino. 
Formé par Matteo Bottigliero (1684-1757), il trouva à Naples un grand soutien à la cour de la famille Bourbon. En collaboration avec les architectes Luigi Vanvitelli et Fernando Fuga, il participa aux chantiers de nombreux édifices napolitains, dans les années 1770-1780, dont il ne reste que peu de traces. De Sanmartino, signalons le groupe de Trois Putti se disputant (musée Capodimonte, Naples), Deux Putti du retable de San Benedetto (Chiesa dei San Marcellino e Festo, Naples), ou encore les Putti tenant les instruments de la Passion du Christ (Certosa di san Martino, Naples), présentant tous les mêmes caractéristiques physiques d'enfants joufflus et potelés surpris en pleine action.
