Condition

There are two flaked chips across the lip and a tiny chip to the outer lip. The base has some wear to the edges, a minute chip to the outer lip and a polished out chip in the pinched oval area. There are also numerous surface scratches and abrasions from wear.

The bottles inscribed with the Wanya Xuan mark are, as a rule, of the general form of Sale 8, lot 1162, or variations on it, such as Sale 3, lot 100. The blue glass bottle in the J & J Collection (Moss, Graham, and Tsang 1993, no. 405) and this one, however, represent notable exceptions. This example is also unique in having a foot in the shape of an ingot of silver.

Apart from the mark and the colour of the glass, the only link to standard bottles of the group, other than the mark, is provided by the flat faceting of the narrow sides, which is evident to some extent on all examples except the above-mentioned blue one in the J & J Collection.

Of the group, this one and Sale 8, lot 1162 appear the most likely to have formed part of early glass production. Here the ruby-red glass has a brownish hue and is distinctly swirly in form, both of which are known features of Yongzheng palace glass of this colour. The bottle, very worn, is covered with a network of tiny, random scratches accumulated over the centuries. Since they are so evenly spread over the bottle that they lend it a silky sheen and none is visually disturbing to the naked eye, the bottle seems to have escaped the attentions of the polisher.
