The seal on the present lot resembles a seal used by Cheng Yiting (1895-1948), who was a member of the eight Friends of Zhushan. He started learning how to paint on porcelain when he was 16, and worked as a porcelain painter in Jiujiang until 1925. That year he moved to Jingdezhen and set up his own business. In 1931, he went to Shanghai to study under Cheng Zhang. It was during this period that his skills greatly improved and he developed the style of bird and flower painting that he is known for today. For examples of works by Cheng Yiting in his typical style see Simon Kwan, Chinese Porcelain of the Republic Period, Hong Kong, 2008, nos. 44-51.
The present lot may be one of Cheng's earlier works produced before 1931.
