筆筒以《赤壁賦》為題，刻畫了蘇軾、佛印及客夜遊赤壁的故事。江面近山岰處船上，主人與客圍桌而坐，童子侍茶，岸邊山民依石，山體峻峭，古松奇崛，蘆葦輕拂。作者取文中「清風徐來，水波不興」、「舉酒屬客」、「客喜而笑」之描述，作世俗化之發揮，使畫面呈現喜悅氛圍。整體上緊下松，場景設計鬆緊有序。主體人物神態刻畫飽滿，左右顧盼生動，富有故事性。山石作大塊面處理，以方刀見長，斜體山石斷面，顯出山體深奧之同時，使人聯想到赤壁故事之悲壯。山石的斜勢、船體的微傾、蘆葦的取勢、浪花的輕起與人物情景合一，使畫面呈現動態。松樹之刻畫取意高古，枝多取上揚之勢，幹則略加鱗片，既繼承晚明朱稚徵（號三松）處理松樹之傳統，又不同於清初吳之璠（號魯珍）之處理，鏤空的應用使畫面多了份空靈之境。作品是清初嘉定竹刻典型風貌。
