Condition

The canvas has a recent relining. The paints surface is dirty and covered by an old yellowed varnish, and the fine brushstrokes and details of the face and accessories are well preserved beneath. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows a very milky varnish. There are very old tiny retouchings delicately executed in the man's face. More recent are washes of restrengthening in his coat and in the background, in particular a 21 cm long vertical area along the right hand margin. There are otherwise a few scattered small repairs along the margins. Overall this work is in good condition. It is offered in an old frame, unusually, the entire structure bound in papier mache, which has worn and torn in places.
