  • a pair, both oil on canvas

Condition

The canvasses have both been relined. In the former, the canvas is slightly loose, and in the latter it is loosening in the lower left corner only. In both pictures the paint surface has not been too pressed and is in overall good condition, covered in a yellowed varnish. Inspection of paint surface with the naked eye: in the former, there is minor retouching along all four margins that has discoloured slightly; a degree of wear in the paint in the some of the darker pigments of the foreground; and some missing paint flecks in the lower right. In the latter, the paint surface remains thick throughout; there is repair along all four margin (due to past frame abrasion); a small nick in the paint in the upper part of the architecture; and a small missing paint fleck in the sky. Inspection under ultraviolet light: in the former, very old retouching in the right hand of the sky; along all margins; and otherwise just tiny scattered retouchings. In the latter, it shows small old scattered retoucings in the sky; and repair in the upper part of the building (1 x 1 cm.); as well as along all margins. The pair are offered in matching carved wooden frames, painted dark green with gilt decorative embellishments, with very minor knocks but structurally sound.
