The composition is based on a workshop engraving, datable to circa 1589, after Goltzius' design which forms part of a series illustrating Ovid's Metamorphoses.1 The painter of the present work made use only of the central section of Goltzius' design and changed the angle of Syrinx's arms and the positioning of the river nymph lying lower left.
